IMPORTANT NOTES FOR NEWBORN MANAGEMENT

Newborns should receive colostrum in the first day of life before being fed milk replacer, preferably within the first 6 hours of life. Colostrum is the first milk from the mother following birth, providing nutrients that are essential to the newborn’s health and growth. If the mother’s colostrum is of high quality but in short supply, feed a colostrum supplement in addition to maternal colostrum. If the mother’s colostrum is not available or is not usable (dirty or contaminated), use a colostrum replacer. For animals that experience nutritional challenges or need support during hot weather or other stress, use an electrolyte supplement.

HELPFUL CONVERSIONS FOR LIQUID MEASURE:

1 QUART = 4 CUPS

FEEDING LIQUID MILK REPLACER TO GOAT KIDS

Bottle feed for the first few days to ensure adequate intake of colostrum and a smooth transition to milk replacer. After that, Sav-A-Kid® milk replacer may be offered warm from a bottle, or room temperature to cold in a suitable feeder free choice. Clean equipment thoroughly and provide fresh milk replacer daily.

WATER AND SOLID FEEDS

Provide fresh, clean water free choice at all times. Begin offering high-quality creep feed free choice at about 1 week of age. Provide access to high-quality hay or pasture at about 3 weeks of age.

WEANING

Most kids can be weaned from milk replacer at 30-45 days when the goat kid is healthy, eating hay and grain daily, and has tripled its birthweight.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE AS A DRY POWDER SUPPLEMENT

Sav-A-Kid® milk replacer may be top-dressed or mixed into grain, dry starter feed, or creep feed to encourage feed intake during the weaning period for kids, or to provide supplemental nutrients to stressed or under-conditioned goats. Mix 2 dry ounces (approximately 1/2 enclosed cup) into 1 pound of fresh dry feed daily. Discard any unconsumed dry feed each day to help prevent spoilage.

IMPORTANT: Individual goat kids vary in requirements. Adjust amounts of powder and/or liquid milk replacer fed according to the kid’s appetite, environmental conditions and your own good judgment. When uncertain about nutrition requirements, please consult with your veterinarian or animal nutritionist.
